Peterborough & the Kawarthas Tourism Announces 2011 Summer Tourism Marketing Initiatives

Kawartha Lakes, Ontario (PRWEB) August 03, 2011

On June 6, 2011, along with their tourism partners, the Greater Peterborough Area Economic Development Corporation’s (GPAEDC), Peterborough & the Kawarthas Tourism (PKT) kicked-off the 2011 summer season with their official Ringing in of Summer celebration in downtown Peterborough. This year, the popular annual event was held at The Venue, where over 100 people were in attendance to learn about the many exciting tourism and business development initiatives planned for this vibrant Ontario vacation destination. “Tourism is extremely important to the economy of the Kawarthas,” states Joseph Rudkins, Innkeeper at the Village Inn (http://www.villageinn.ca), a 26 room country inn located in the historic Kawartha Lakes town of Lakefield. “As an operator of a Kawartha accommodation property, I firmly support all efforts to promote the region,” adds Rudkins.

The 2011 Ringing in of Summer celebration began with a welcome from the Tourism Advisory Committee Chair, Joe Corrigan and greetings from Peterborough M.P. Dean Del Mastro, Peterborough M.P.P. Jeff Leal, Peterborough Mayor Darryl Bennett, and the President and CEO of GOA EDC, Dan Taylor. The next speaker was Fiona Dawson, Director of Tourism who reported on recent updates and informed those in attendance that the new destination branding initiative for Peterborough and the Kawarthas will be introduced this year to better promote and market the region and strengthen the Kawartha brand to distinguish it from other Ontario tourist regions. The 2011 Peterborough & the Kawarthas Travel Guide was officially launched by Kelly Jessup, Marketing Communications Specialist and Coralie Jacobs, Partner Relations Officer. The Travel Guide has always been an important marketing tool that lists upcoming events and information about Peterborough & the Kawartha accommodations, restaurants, attractions, businesses and services.

During the event, Peterborough and the Kawarthas Tourism, the official destination marketing organization for the Greater Peterborough Region, announced the launch of their newly redesigned tourism website, http://www.thekawarthas.net. The website will provide more in-depth information to better highlight area tourism businesses. As well, a brainstorming session and panel discussion comprised of prominent area business people called The Power of Positive Partnership, explored ways of creating new business partnerships and the challenges of tourism marketing.

To conclude the event, a town crier officially “rang in” the summer season. Tourism partners were then treated to refreshments supplied by several area food service businesses. Those in attendance were free to browse displays presented by local artisans, the Business Advisory Centre, Trip-Click.com, Sustainable Peterborough, and others. There was also opportunity for networking with fellow business partners.
