<p> The first Earth Day, April 22, 1970, brought the environment into a focus never achieved before. Forty-two years later the epiphany of Earth Day is still alive in the programs and opportunities of companies like JOURNEYS International, based in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  </p>

<p>The first image of earth, broadcast by astronauts on the moon and endlessly reproduced by the media, revealed Earth as a blue marble with a thin layer of life spinning through vast, cold space.  This beautiful, fragile, lonely image inspired both concern and curiosity. Concern focused on pollution, population growth and destruction of natural areas. Curiosity led people to explore the environment not as conquerors, but as curators.  </p>

<p>JOURNEYS grew from the experiences of its founders Joan and Will Weber, who were active organizers of the first Earth Day in 1970 while they were students at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. After college, through serving in the Peace Corps and teaching in Nepal, the Webers witnessed close-up both the threat and opportunity that resulted from visitors with wealth arriving in fragile and endangered environments.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Foreign leisure travel, prior to the 1970s, was very much an exercise in bringing the travelers&#8217; own culture, values, foods and accommodation standards with them. The rare Himalayan trek or African safari was a full-scale logistics operation with the burden of extensive imported goods to make travelers feel comfortable and protected from perceived dangers of local people and environments. This kind of travel was highly consumptive of local resources, and served as showcase for the stereotypical &#8220;ugly American&#8221; values.  The inspiration of Earth Day introduced a bit of traveler modesty, fostered a sense of shared stewardship, and affirmed that the wisdom and traditions of other cultures are at least as valuable as our own.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>In 1978 JOURNEYS&#8217; first trek to the Mount Everest area of Nepal was advertised with fliers at the University of Michigan where the Webers were graduate students. Eight adventurers signed on for a four-week Himalayan trek, followed by elephant-riding in the jungles of Chitwan National Park in southern Nepal. The idea was not to see a place in spite of local obstacles, cultures and environmental adversity, but because the local culture and environment offered unique experiences. The Webers&#8217; Sherpa friends from their Peace Corps days were in charge of the 1978 trip, and that first trip cemented a model of sustainable ecotourism that was later extended in trips to India, Bhutan and Sri Lanka, and then to Southeast Asia, Africa and the Americas.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Each eco-tourism trip emphasizes learning about cultures and environments from the local people who know them best. Trips often minimize time in big cities, shun luxury and business hotels and resort-style enclaves in favor of one-of-a-kind inns and nature lodges. You are more likely to travel in 4-wheel drive jeeps, minivans or by hiking and bicycling as preferable alternatives to whirlwind big bus tours. Many JOURNEYS  trips support local environmental or cultural projects.</p>

<p> Each year the U.S. Coast Guard records thousands of recreational boating accidents. So as millions of Americans gear up for another summer on the water, Grange Insurance offers simple strategies that help to protect people and their property. &#13;<br />

     Inspect your vehicle and trailer before towing your boat. Before the boat is attached, check to make sure tires are inflated and in good condition, trailer lights function properly, lug nuts are tight and your tow vehicle has the proper amount of oil and fuel before the boat is attached.&#13;</p>
<p>     Stow one inspected life jacket aboard per passenger.  Boat owners must test all life jackets approximately once a year. Replace jackets that are faded, waterlogged or have holes or tears. All passengers should also wear a life jacket at all times whenever they are out on the water. &#13;</p>
<p>     Maintain safety out of the water. Staying hydrated and wearing proper sun protection is essential while boating because the water reflection creates stronger UV rays. Using a higher SPF sunscreen, wearing sunglasses, a hat, proper deck shoes and having additional clothing for quick changes in weather are all necessary.  &#13;</p>
<p>     Know your boat and be aware of your surroundings. Confirm all individuals responsible for driving are familiar with the controls of the boat and the area in which you are boating. Drivers should always watch the boat path and pay close attention to other boating traffic and potential obstructions. &#13;</p>
<p>     Utilize everybody aboard when participating in water activities. According to John Ammendola, president of personal lines for Grange Insurance, water sports, such as waterskiing or tubing, are a team sport and are related to boat owner safety. Drivers are responsible for choosing a safe place to enjoy water activities, and other participants must remain alert of other boats, people in the water and possible obstructions.
<p>“Many states require an observer be aboard to monitor water-skiers and tubers, watch the area around the boat, and help communicate to the driver,” says Ammendola. “The water-skier or tuber should be able to communicate with the boat and spotter through hand signals, and everybody aboard should understand the signals.” </p>
<p>&#13;</p>

<p> At an age when many nurses are eying retirement, Brenda Post has achieved one of her professional goals. At the age of 57, Post received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, a credential she earned through Utica College’s online RN to BS in Nursing program, last Sunday, May 13.  Joining her at graduation ceremonies on campus that day was her daughter, Sarah, who received her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Utica.  It’s not every day that a mom and daughter share a graduation day&#8211;especially when it falls on Mother’s Day.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>During her 33-year career as a nurse, Post has worked as an elementary school nurse, a prison nurse for the New York State Department of Corrections, and a critical care nurse and supervisor at a hospital. Yet she still had career ambitions, including teaching at local colleges and at the hospital where she works. Post also saw first-hand the way technology and the increasing complexity of health care was changing the nature and demands of nursing. When her daughter decided to pursue a graduate degree at Utica College’s campus, Post was inspired to finally earn her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, choosing Utica’s online RN to BS in Nursing program.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Having Sarah on hand to help her with some of the more technical aspects of her coursework was an advantage, but Post also applauds the support available to her as an online student at Utica: “The academic advisors have been super and the resources have been awesome.”  Post received credit for work experience and was able to complete her coursework around the demands of two jobs and family responsibilities thanks to the flexibility of the online format.  Getting to know her fellow students, many of whom lived in other parts of the country, and hearing their perspectives was another benefit, as was becoming more computer literate—a must in nursing today.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Adding to the excitement, Saturday marked her daughter’s birthday as well as the birthday of nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale, so Post certainly felt a great deal of pride in herself and her family, as well as a sense of accomplishment, which she plans to share with other nurses thinking about advancing their education. “I would definitely recommend Utica College,” she says. “If I can do it at my age with my family and working two jobs, they can do it too.” </p>

<p>Boomers know they are aging but insist they are different &#8212; they will defy old age. Their intention is valid but they don&#8217;t know how to turn that intention into reality because old age is something that must be experienced in order to understand and avoid the lures, traps and pitfalls that lead to decline.</p>

<p>Most boomers declare their retirement will be different from their parents and grandparents, and for many, that will be true to the extent that their lifestyle will be different &#8212; at least, for a couple of years. After the &#8220;retirement honeymoon&#8221; dissipates and reality sets in, they will be living their parent&#8217;s traditional retired lifestyle. It takes an extraordinary amount of preplanning and awareness of what&#8217;s really ahead to avoid it because tradition and the culture are skewed toward the traditional retired mindset and lifestyle. It&#8217;s difficult to avoid doing what everybody else is doing or is expected. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>At 83, Barbara has been where boomers are now. She&#8217;s seen and experienced the lures, traps and pitfalls boomers need to avoid if they want to achieve their intention to &#8220;never get old&#8221;. (&#8220;Getting old&#8221; has nothing to do with the passage of time &#8212; it&#8217;s a choice &#8212; something allowed to happen by default.) She&#8217;s beaten the babushka off of Mother Time and boomers can do it too, if they take seriously her experience and advice.</p>

<p>The leading paint supplier recently announced its colour trend predications for 2012-2013, and in line with current fashion and design trends, it is signalling a shift into brighter, bolder colours for Australian interiors.</p>

<p>The trend predication towards bright and bold is one backed by leading Melbourne house painters, Valdemar’s Painters. Bright blue, in particular, has been high on the fashion radar in recent times and according to Valdemar’s Eva Gluchowski it is now making its debut in more and more Melbourne living rooms.</p>

Combining bright walls with soft furnishings and accessories in creams, whites and beiges ensure the colour provides its intended effect without overwhelming.</p>

<p>But while the trend towards more adventurous interiors seems set to continue for some time yet, according to Ms Gluchowski, the popularity of the more traditional earthy tones remains strong. A claim echoed by Dulux, who have tipped ‘time-honoured’ tones of reds and browns to remain enduringly popular into 2013.</p>

<p>“While these paint choices might be labelled conservative choices, the fact remains they are popular for a reason. These earthy tones provide a beautiful warmth to any room without the risk of overly dominating.</p>

<p>“While some paint trends tend to come and go with fashion, we expect earthy tones to remain a classic choice that will continue in popularity for many years to come.</p>

The cast and crew will be celebrating their North American debut, as well as Cinco de Mayo, at Finz Bar and Grill in Mount Pleasant, SC. After its May 5th premiere, the show can be seen weekly on Saturdays at 5pm and Sundays at 1 a.m. and 9 a.m. EST.  </p>

<p>Host Doug Slater is a licensed captain whose love for fishing and adventure has taken him around the world. Co-host Kurt Feldhun is an award winning filmmaker and lifelong fisherman whose work has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show and MTV. Slater and Feldhun have been friends since childhood and fishing buddies for more than 20 years. Along for the ride is Jerri, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, whose love for fishing and life on the water rivals that of any of her human companions. </p>

<p>Shot in close proximity to Charleston, South Carolina, episode one finds Slater and Feldhun fishing for Redfish in the South Carolina “low country” with legendary Captain Champ Smith. They hope to catch one slot fish for the table as well as put Feldhun on his very first Redfish. Along the way, they encounter endless oyster beds, mullet explosions and dolphins foraging in two feet of water. After a successful day out on the water, Slater and Feldhun head to Finz Bar and Grill where owner Chad Shores prepares the days catch in true low country fashion.  </p>
